Prep Painting: Stains & Mildew

It is a common idea that applying a fresh coat of paint is enough to get rid of all surface imperfections, stains and all. But, yes, the real world doesn't work in such a fashion. When applying a wet coat of paint, it may appear that the stains and mildew are gone. But they are really not gone. In due time, as the paint dries, the stains will seep right through and the new coat of paint will be a new coat of stained paint.

So, what can you do? What is the right procedure to get rid of mildew and stains?

To accomplish this you will need: water, household bleach, primer, paint, and a TSP solution. First, you will need to mix three parts of water and one part of laundry bleach in a bucket. Remember to protect your hands and your eyes all the time while getting rid of these stains and mildew.

The next step consists of applying the mixture to the surface with a sponge. Apply plenty of the mixture. You can repeat the procedure after 20 minutes. After the mildew has disappeared, you can now rinse the bleach and mildew with clean water. Finally, after the surface has dried, you can use a TSP (trisodium phosphate), a powerful soap before priming and painting.
