How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Nothing can liven up a kitchen more than a fresh coat of paint. If you are looking for a simple and cost-effective home improvement project, then taking on the kitchen cabinets may be exactly what you need to feel fresh and new.

Often a kitchen doesn't feel like a kitchen because it is dark and dreary. Fortunately you can bring back that light and fresh new look simply by adding a fresh coat of paint. Here’s how to transform a bleak kitchen into something fresh and new.

  • ·   Clean all kitchen cabinets. This is the most important step in the process. Your cabinets are probably coated in grime from cooking and other gunk that builds up in kitchens. Use sandpaper to smooth the exterior of your cabinets.
  • ·         Label each cabinet piece so you know where to put each piece after you are done.
  • ·         Remove all knobs and other parts and remove hinges.
  • ·         Paint a primer on the cabinets. Brush against the grain, and then apply primer with the grain Let this dry. Apply one side at a time.  Sand the primer to take away brush strokes. Use a fine grit sanding stone.
  • ·         Vacuum the surface of your cabinets to prevent the sand particles from sticking to your cabinets.
  • ·         Apply the finish color, brushing on the paint going with the grain of the cabinets. Use a thin coat of paint.
  • ·         Let this dry. Do one side of the cabinet at a time. You can also choose to spray the paint on if you feel comfortable doing this.
  • ·         Let the cabinets sit for one to two days until the paint is completely dry.
  • ·         Once the cabinets are completely dry, you can re-attach the hinges and doorknobs or other parts.
  • ·         You can re-attach the cabinets using your labeling system.
