Painting Tools: Brushes and Rollers

The quality of your home painting job will depend greatly on the quality of the tools you have. Thus selecting the right tools can not only make your paint jobs look better but also help you be more efficient. There are two main tools that are used extensively while painting:

1) Brushes:

When should you use a paint brush? A paint brush is the ideal tool when painting trim, corners, narrow strips, and small areas. The paint brush is a very personal tool. That is why there is a wide variety available. A good brush should feel like a natural extension of your hand.

Paint brushes come in two main categories: natural fiber paint brushes (great for solvent-based finishes) and synthetic paint brushes (great for water-based finishes, such as latex paint). Although it is not uncommon that some paints also use synthetic paint brushes for oil-based coatings.

Paint brushes are versatile, durable, reusable, and are faster to clean up. However, they are slower than a roller and can leave brush marks.

2) Rollers:

When should you use a paint roller? A paint roller comes really helpful when you need to paint large, flat surfaces, such as walls, stucco, and concrete surfaces. Rollers can be made out of nylon/polyester (for use with latex paints), natural fiber (idea of roil-based coatings), and a blend of natural and synthetic covers (that can used with all paints).

The main advantage of paint rollers is the speed of application and versatility.

One last point that needs to be stressed is that, whether you use a brush or a roller, the initial extra investment in high quality tools is worth every penny that will pay off in the easy of application and the final end result.
