A Quick Guide to Painting Right

Painting your house is a quick way to not just make it look better but  to get your money back in case you are thinking of remodeling it and getting it ready to be sold. Painting your house can also be quite fun and full of possibilities. Paint comes in a wide array of colors and finishes (from flat finishes to high gloss finishes). Also, using a variety of techniques, such as sponging, stippling, and texturing, it is possible to add a unique look to each room in your house.

Now, how can you make sure that you are painting the right way? Paint is great. It covers and changes the colors of bumps, dents, cracks in doors, walls, and trims. However, it doesn't make the blemishes go away. So, the very first step to painting right has to do with doing the preparation work, that is, to repair the surface as much as possible before starting to paint. In fact, one could say that the time that should be spent painting should be the same as the time that should be spent repairing.

One of the first steps of prep work is washing. Use a cleaning agent, such as trisodium phosphate, followed with a rinse with clean water. Then, proceed to repair each imperfection using one of a variety of strategies. For instance, you can caulk small cracks. You can also use a surfacing compound and a lightweight surfacing paste to patch walls. You can also use grazier's compound for filling nail holes.

Now, you are ready to proceed to the actual painting. Remember to buy the best quality paint, brushes, and rollers possible, as this will produce the best results. Also, remember to protect any surface you don't want paint to get onto, like floors. What follows is applying primer to the surfaces. Primer helps the paint dry properly as it creates a smooth and consistent layer for the paint to be spread over and to bind onto. A final tip: Remember to sand between coats. A 120-grit paper should be enough.

Painting can be fun, if done right. So, get to it, and be creative!
